Karachi- The City of Lights

The beautiful tradition, arts, architecture, food, and the famous Ajrak, something that Pakistan truly takes pride in right here in the heart of Karachi.

Karachi is a cultural amalgam with a cosmopolitan touch to it. With the majority of the city inhabited with Urdu speaking immigrants, the common language is Urdu. However, most know Sindhi as well.

The culture in Karachi has been split into two parts. It seems as if two worlds have been combined and Karachi is just a focal point to both. With one part of the city entirely different from the rest of the country, the other stays close to culture and tradition. With one so progressive and advanced, while the other is so naive. Karachi has a treasure of both worlds.

It’s hard not to see the beauty that rests in Karachi’s culture, but it’s even harder not to surge your cupboard with gorgeous hand-made Sindhi clothes. Though you might close your eyes to these beautiful hard-to-get-over dresses, you’ll fail to resist different flavors, and cuisines found here. And as said; A heart wants what it wants, but a foodie gets what it wants. You’ll agree when you get to Karachi.

Here is a list of few things we love about Karachi:

Ajrak:

Is there anything more Sindhi than ajrak? I think not. Ajrak or more accurately the sacred cloth of Sindh?  Right here in Karachi, intricate patterns are embossed on clothes and to your surprise, everything is done by hand. With so much love and hard-work, a normal ajrak takes about 40 days to complete. As someone rightly said that the best gifts come from the heart, not the store, Ajrak testifies these words. The final product is so gorgeously breathtaking that one finds itself in a tough position to pick one.

And perhaps “shoes for everyone” will add more definition to it as it is a perfect fit for both rich and poor, teenagers and kids, men and women. This ultimately gives a valid reason to not think twice before buying the gorgeous shoes. These are my go-to shoes. What are yours?

Sindhi Topi:

What better represents Sindh if not Sindhi Topi? This symbol of pride is a hat which is circular/cylindrical except for a portion cut out in the front to expose the forehead. Sindhi cap has ornate designs with mirrors sewed into it that adds more to its beauty.  The hat is often given as a gift or as a sign of respect and proudly worn by the Sindhis. Further to intrigue your interest “Sindhi Topi Day” is celebrated zealously in Sindh to highlight its importance.
